Chronicle reporter Jenalia Moreno wrote a story about the lack of airport imaging devices at Houston airports, specifically Bush IAH. While not in use in Houston, the body imaging technology is used in 19 airports around the United States.
From the article:
The screening technology is taking on heightened urgency this week after a Nigerian man was accused of using a highly powerful explosive attached to his body to blow up the jetliner on a flight from Amsterdam.
Such technology has been around for many years, but is only now trickling into U.S. airports.
It was used in Houston but only for two months earlier this year as part of a test phase. Bush Intercontinental Airport's Terminal E was part of a government pilot program for two types of body imaging technologies — millimeter wave technology and backscatter technology.
“The technology essentially scans the body and looks for any anomalies, of things being hidden on the skin,” said Andrea McCauley, a spokeswoman with the Transportation and Security Administration.
