The National Park Service is teaming with the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition to transform a 45-mile stretch of land into a natural refuge with land and water trails, parks and wide-open spaces.

The Greens Bayou Corridor Project recently won support from the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) because of the area’s rich resources, strong community support and likelihood of success, said Kathryn Nichols, community planner, RTCA Program.

“Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition is excited to be included among the notable list of organizations awarded the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance grant,” said Regina Lindsey, executive director of the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition. “Planning for a 45-mile watershed is a massive undertaking. This grant will provide the needed technical assistance to link existing recreational facilities, plan for a linear trail system, and help identify future opportunities, making Greens Bayou an asset to the Houston region.”

The support grant will help the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition develop a strategic plan for the corridor, which stretches along the bayou. That plan will focus on parks, land and water trails, acquisition of adjacent open space, conservation and landscaping. RTCA will also assist in identifying potential partners and contributors, and locating funding sources and partnerships.

The Greens Bayou watershed meanders throughout Houston, Jersey Village, Jacinto City, Galena Park, Humble and Harris County. The watershed includes four primary streams: Greens Bayou, Halls Bayou, Garners Bayou and Reinhardt Bayou.
Through the RTCA program, the National Park Service helps communities and neighborhoods preserve their important local resources, protect river resources, develop new trails and greenways and create new natural areas. These projects are locally-led with RTCA staff supporting local recreation and conservation leaders. This year, 44 projects were selected as RTCA grant recipients in the Intermountain Region, spanning eight states.
