Recently, at the Annual Partners Reception and Awards Dinner, the East Aldine Management District took time to honor some of its key partners and stakeholders. Among those receiving awards was Dr. Steve Head, president of Lone Star College-North Harris for the college’s outstanding and ongoing contributions to the community.
“This is the first year we’ve had the awards,” said Richard Cantu, director of community services for the East Aldine District, which encompasses 15 square miles of the northernmost portion of Harris County and serves more than 60,000 citizens and 10,000 or more families.
“Our program of work – our service plan,” Cantu explained, “focuses on mobility and transportation, water and sewer infrastructure, public safety and security, environmental and urban design, economic development and community leadership…and within each of these core areas of responsibility are programs and projects to benefit the East Aldine area and its residents.”
The Reception and Awards Dinner, held at the Greenspoint Club, attracted more than 125 people who began the evening by hearing a report of the previous year’s progress as well as an outline of plans for the upcoming year, presented by the District’s Executive Director David Hawes.
This report was followed by the presentation of awards for outstanding service to the East Aldine District by Clyde Bailey, chairman of the board.
Those receiving honors and their categories included LSC-North Harris for its educational contributions to the community; Harris County Public Health Veterinary Services, the district’s outstanding public health partner; outstanding governmental partner–John Blunt, director of the Architecture and Engineering Division of the Harris County Public Infrastructure Department; and Captain Paul Cordova of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, for outstanding contributions to public safety.
Recognized as the East Aldine District’s outstanding business partner of the year was North Houston Bank. Accepting the award for outstanding Community Youth Services was the Aldine Youth Community Center and outstanding volunteer of the year was Shirley Reed for her work with Aldine Communities Together and the Chairman’s Award was presented to Hawes Hill Calderon, LLD–the firm that manages and staffs the district.
“We were extremely pleased to recognize Lone Star College-North Harris Campus as our first-ever education partner of the year,” Cantu said. “Without question, education is extremely important to progress in any sector, but we see our educational resources within the East Aldine District as some of our greatest assets.
“The future of this community depends on a well-trained, well-educated workforce,” Dr. Head explained, “and as we continue to achieve this important goal, it makes it possible for our community to move forward and prosper. Lone Star College-North Harris has its roots in the Aldine area. We realize it is vital not only to offer education but to maintain a presence throughout the community–providing not only education, but easy access to education.”
“The East Aldine Management District looks forward not only to continue working with the college, but working closely with the college through joint plans to build a multi-services complex,” Cantu pointed out. “This complex will house the District’s offices as well as the sheriff’s department, governmental offices, perhaps a YMCA and a portion of the college’s academic programs.
“Dr. Head is representing the college district on that committee with us,” he continued, “and we’re looking forward to building an area where we can bring many different services together. In this undertaking, the college district plays an important role as a key partner as well as a partner in creating and realizing this unique concept.”

For those of you who I have not had the pleasure to meet yet, please allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Vernon Reed. My family and I have been residents of Kingwood for 7 years. I am happily married and have a daughter that attends the Lone Star College Kingwood campus.
I am a very active member throughout our community, and a proud member of Kingwood First Baptist Church.
Serving my fellow neighbors is my calling. A well rounded educational experience for all is my mission.
I have 15 years of Education experience, serving on numerous committees and organization committed to education.
I truly care about our education system. I want to work for you on the Lone Star College System Board of Trustees.
I want to be your voice on the Lone Star Board of Trustees, Position 7. I assure each of you that your voice would be heard.
I will hold and maintain an open door policy by making myself available to all concerned.
Together lets you and I work to seek to eliminate wasteful spending, advocate against cuts that directly impact education, and hold accountable the State of Texas to see that we receive our fair share of the maximum funding we are entitled to.
State funding is the biggest issue LSCS faces with a potential 5 percent cut in state funding looming in the near future.
The next two years things are going to get very difficult for LSCS.
Please consider me for YOUR candidate of choice.
Together lets you and I work to see that we retain the quality instructors that have made and continue to make LSCS the outstanding educational installation it is currently known as.
I will be a friend to the taxpayers, the student body, the staff and faculty, and the community as a whole. (There are other ways to support education other than constant tax increases.
I will serve you 365 days a year, always looking for ways to improve the system.

By way of my position on the Board of Trustees, Position 7 would be that truly community position that you as the community have always wanted, and I assure each of you that your voice would be heard.

I am further seeking this position, to help expand our educational opportunities, while seeking to make learning equally accessible for all.
I will work in many ways for you, for example, to also control the constant rising cost of education - I will further work to see that as students your additional fees would remain low and again, at a cost you can afford. I would seek to eliminate wasteful spending, advocate against cuts that directly impact education, and hold accountable the State of Texas to see that we receive our fair share of the maximum funding we are entitled to.
Employee positions would be safe from cuts with me, and.......
