The Greenspoint District’s effective and successful public safety programs have earned the district a prestigious crime prevention award. The Texas Crime Prevention Association (TCPA), a non-profit dedicated to promoting best practices in crime prevention, recently presented the Greenspoint District with an “Outstanding Crime Prevention Business” award at its annual conference. The award is given to organizations that reduce crime and provide the greatest support to crime prevention programs. The Greenspoint District also won the organization’s “Outstanding Crime Prevention Organization” award in 2008.
“The Greenspoint District works hard to make our area a safe and successful activity center,” said Greenspoint District Director of Public Safety Al Aranda. “This award is a reflection of our strong law enforcement partnerships and the success of our district-initiated public safety programs. We are deeply grateful to all of the organizations involved in our public safety programs.”
The TCPA award highlights seven successful district-initiated programs that seek to reduce crime and involve the community in crime prevention. These programs include:
• Operation Greensweep – A collaborative effort with the Houston Police Department (HPD) that utilizes a series of high visibility patrol squads, crime sweeps and narcotic enforcement activities to reduce crime.
• Harris County Sheriff's Office Overtime Program – A program that increases citizen and police interaction and suppresses criminal activity by providing high-visibility patrol squads, crime sweeps and bike patrol.
• Greenspoint Stopping Auto Theft (G.S.A.T) – A partnership with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office aimed at reducing and preventing auto theft.
• Off-Duty Special Operations Program – A program utilizing Houston, Harris County, Aldine ISD and METRO police to increase the visibility of and interaction with law enforcement in the community.
• Graffiti Abatement Program – An initiative that quickly identifies and removes graffiti from public or private property.
• Auto Theft Report Card – A public awareness program using police and private security officers to conduct vehicle inspections.
• Crime Prevention/CPTED Surveys – A program aimed at educating businesses and multi-family communities on crime prevention principles.
These programs have yielded measurable reductions in crime. According to statistics from HPD and Harris County, since the district was created in 1991, Greenspoint has experienced a 42 percent reduction in Part I crimes (major crimes) per 1,000 people. Furthermore, these reductions were realized even though the area’s population has increased by 48 percent and employment has increased by 106 percent.
The Greenspoint Public Safety Center at Greenspoint Mall, which was established by the district in 1994, serves as home base for many of the cooperative programs operating in the Greenspoint area.

Burglars and Door Security
After having our door kicked twice in a month, a Harris Cnty deputy recommended the door devil (http://www.doordevil.com). i had never heard of it, but i am basically happy with the purchase. the door fits tighter, but they arent kicking the door again. But makes me upset is my dog sat by and watched twice...there were no treats for him for a while.
at your own risk
greenspoint is just like sharpstown. you take your life in your own hands by going to either one of these malls. the best thing that can be done in both cases is to tear both of them down, including the neighborhoods, and start completely over
Re:Greenspoint Safety Awards!
First the positive; every little bit helps. "A journey of 1000 miles begins with one step". Nothing ventured is nothing gained. At least someone hasn't thrown in the towel on this area. As long as people care then they can effect a positive change in the neighborhood.
That said, this area is & will continue to be known as "Gunspoint" until all the riff raff are driven out of the surrounding apartment complex's. By riff raff, I mean the human filth that seem to prey on all the hard working citizens who can't afford to move away from here. Also napalming said apartments wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Keep up the good work guys but there's still so much to be done until this part of Houston is safe to walk alone at night. Best of luck with what must be an impossible situation out there!
award to gunspoint
wow.. every couple of years this place gets award.
tear down some of the 200 apt complexes in the area
and see the area change.
